This weekend saw the launch of a brand new weekly market in the awesome setting of the Old Truman Brewery in East London.
The London Artisan Market is a curated market focusing on quality and diversity of products all made by independent producers and makers.
Each quarterly season a different designer will make an Instagram wall for the market event which will be on show at the market for 3 months - and I was delighted to be asked to be the first artist to take part in this awesome experience!
It was a challenge for me to create something that would be striking and colourful and fill the space, but also be able to be transportable, re-usable and easy to store.
In the end I kept the design simple with a pattern that could be decorative on its own or as a backdrop and reflected the changing of the seasons with a dash of vibrant colour. I made it by using a cardboard stencil to draw around, then following the pencil lines, I cut out the skeletal leaf shapes using a scalpel and scissors. I then painted the shapes different colours and had a play around with different arrangements and compositions, before gluing them all down.
From start to finish - the 'instagram' wall
I had originally planned use the paper shapes without sticking them to a backdrop, but it soon became apparent that it would be far too delicate and not suitable for displaying on a wall for 3 months!
I was also lucky enough to have a stall at the launch event which was in a lovely space in the Truman Brewery, with some of the largest tables for a market I have ever seen! The setting was perfect and I was happy to be among some fabulous company including my stall neighbour Basil and Ford, Dorry Spikes Illustration, and Suzie London among others.
In the run up to Christmas the roaster is full with new stallholders each week and more workshops and talks from different creatives and inspirational people within the design industry. (Check out the website here for up to date information). It is definitely worth a visit for some fabulous Christmas shopping - and don't forget to take a snap while you're there in front of my colourful Instagram wall!
